The Extract Data tool packages the layers from a map into datasets that can be used in ArcGIS Pro, Microsoft Excel, and other products. The Extract Data tool creates an item in your content containing the data from the layers. You can then download the data from the item.
Note:
The Extract Data tool provides options for exporting data, including the option to export features that are in a defined study area. For full datasets, you can also export the dataset directly from the item details page. For more information, see Use layers.
The output is a hosted item containing a downloadable .csv file, file geodatabase, .kml file, or shapefile.

Examples
The manager of a small food delivery business has been tasked with increasing the efficiency of delivery routes during rush-hour traffic and exploring potential locations for a new restaurant. The manager creates a dataset consisting of delivery locations and demographic data and uses the Extract Data tool to create a comma-separated values (.csv) file that can be used for further analysis in spreadsheets or in GIS applications, such as ArcGIS Pro.
Usage notes
The Extract Data tool includes configurations for input layers, extent settings, and a result layer.
Input layers
The Input layers group includes the Input layers parameter, which specifies the hosted feature layer or sketch layers to be extracted. Multiple layers can be selected for export at the same time. Only layers that you own or with export enabled can be selected.
Extent settings
The Extent settings group includes the following parameters:
- Extent layer specifies the point, line, or polygon features that define the extent of the features to be extracted.
Note:
The extent can also be set in the Processing extent environment setting. The default processing extent is the full extent of the dataset.
If an extent layer is selected, the features that are extracted must be within the extent of both the extent layer and the processing extent. If no extent layer is selected, the extent will be based solely on the processing extent.
- Clip features that intersect the extent specifies whether features that intersect the extent will be clipped. This parameter is available when an input layer is selected for Extent layer. The parameter options are as follows:
- Unchecked—Features that intersect the extent will be extracted without clipping.
- Checked—Features that intersect the extent will be clipped, and only portions of those features within the extent will be extracted.
Result layer
The Result layer group includes the following parameters:
- Output data format specifies the file format of the item that is created. Supported formats include .csv file, file geodatabase, shapefile, and .kml file.
- Output name specifies the name of the item that is created in your content. The name must be unique. If an item with the same name already exists in your organization, the tool will fail and you will be prompted to use a different name.
- Save in folder specifies the name of a folder in My Content where the result will be saved.
Limitations
The following limitations apply to the tool:
- Drawing a custom boundary is only supported in Map Viewer Classic.
- Extractable layers include layers that you own and layers with export enabled.
- When exporting lines or areas to a .csv file, only nonspatial attributes are extracted.
- Attachments are only extractable if the output data format is a file geodatabase and Clip features that intersect the extent is unchecked.
Environments
Analysis environment settings are additional parameters that affect a tool's results. You can access the tool's analysis environment settings from the Environment settings parameter group.
This tool honors the Processing extent analysis environment.
Note:
The default processing extent in Map Viewer is Full extent. This default is different from Map Viewer Classic in which Use current map extent is enabled by default.
Outputs
The output is a hosted item containing a downloadable .csv file, file geodatabase, .kml file, or shapefile. If multiple layers are extracted as .csv or .kml files, the files will be stored in a single compressed (.zip) folder.
Licensing requirements
This tool requires the following licensing and configurations:
- Creator or GIS Professional user type
- Publisher or Administrator role, or an equivalent custom role
